What Makes Great School Photos (and Why They Matter More Than You Think)
When a parent lands on your school’s website, scrolls through your social media, or flips through a brochure - they’re not just looking for uniforms and playgrounds.
They’re looking for a feeling.
A sense of belonging.
A glimpse into the kind of environment their child will be part of.
That’s where great school photography comes in.
Your Images Tell a Story - Even When You Don’t Realise It
Every photo shared by your school speaks volumes.
It tells a story about who you are, what you value, and how you operate as a learning community. The question is - are they telling the story you want them to tell?
Are your current images showing the warmth of your staff, the diversity of your students, the joy of learning, the engagement in play, or the pride in achievement?
Or are they simply ticking a box with standard headshots and assembly photos?
What Makes a Great School Photo?
Great school photography doesn’t just capture what’s happening - it captures how it feels to be part of your school. Here's what I look for (and deliver) in every shoot:
Authenticity – Real moments, real smiles, and real learning in action.
Diversity – Representation of your entire school community, so every child and family feels seen.
Connection – Relationships matter. Images should show students learning together, staff supporting each other, and the community you’ve built.
Warmth & Belonging – Not just polished classrooms, but the sense of welcome and safety your school provides.
Clarity & Functionality – Yes, even beautiful images need to be practical! Clear, high-resolution, on-brand photos that work across platforms.
Your Website Is Often the First Impression
In many cases, your website is the first place a prospective family interacts with your school. What are they seeing?
Great school website photos should include:
Your leadership team - approachable, professional, and proud of your school
Candid moments of student learning, play, and collaboration
Teachers engaging with students - building trust and connection
Key spaces around your school: classrooms, playgrounds, art rooms, libraries
Community events and shared experiences
Culturally and linguistically diverse representation of your community
Details that matter: student work on walls, uniforms, signage, welcome areas
And of course … no stock photos. Real photos of your school are what matter.
How Often Should You Refresh Your Images?
Many schools rely on the same set of images for years. But schools change - leadership changes, programs evolve, new families arrive, new spaces are built.
I recommend schools update their images at least once a year, especially for website and marketing use. Fresh images ensure that what you show the world reflects the current story of your school.
A Note for School Leaders & HR Teams
You don’t need to figure this all out alone. I have created a free checklist for school principals, communications teams, and marketers
Whether you need a full image refresh or just want a handful of updated shots to round out your library, I can help make the process easy, collaborative, and (yes!) enjoyable. I work around your school day, with an understanding of how schools operate - and I always make time to capture the real moments that make your school special.
Let’s make sure your school’s images are working for you - telling a story you’re proud of.
