Capturing the people behind Geelong Sustainability’s community-led change
Geelong Sustainability: Visual storytelling for community-led change
Since the beginning of 2024, I’ve had the privilege of supporting Geelong Sustainability through ongoing photography for its events, programs and community initiatives.
Geelong Sustainability is a community-powered organisation working across environmental resilience, advocacy and education in the Geelong region. Its work happens through people: volunteers welcoming visitors, community members learning together, speakers sharing ideas, and local organisations collaborating on practical solutions.
My role has been to help make that work visible.
The brief
Geelong Sustainability needed a flexible collection of authentic images that could support its storytelling across social media, newsletters, campaigns, reports and future community communications.
The images needed to do more than document an event. They needed to show the atmosphere, connection and purpose behind each gathering, and help people see themselves as part of it.
The work
Across our ongoing collaboration, I’ve photographed a wide range of moments, including:
Sustainable House Day open homes and community visitors
Climate Connect gatherings and community conversations
Seminars, forums and Resilience Canopy training
Festivals, campaigns and ground-level community initiatives
Collaborative projects with partner organisations
Headshots and portraits for speakers, volunteers and team members
Each project has had a different rhythm. Some calls for quiet, documentary-style coverage of people learning and connecting. Others call for energy, atmosphere and the sense of collective momentum that comes from a room full of people who care.
The approach
Before each event, I focus on understanding what matters most: the key moments, the people involved, the atmosphere to capture and how the images will be used afterwards.
On the day, I work responsively and unobtrusively - looking for genuine interactions, practical moments and the small details that help tell a larger story. The aim is always to create images that feel human, useful and true to the organisation’s work.
The result
Together, we’ve built a growing visual library that Geelong Sustainability can draw on for its ongoing communications - images that celebrate volunteers, bring campaigns to life, support community education and help future partners understand the impact of the work.
Photography cannot create change on its own. But it can help people see the work, feel connected to it and understand why it matters.
In their words
“ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL - these will make a big difference in our storytelling.”

Working together
This has been one of the most meaningful ongoing collaborations in my business. It reflects the kind of work I’m most drawn to: purposeful organisations, real community stories and imagery created to support connection, advocacy and long-term impact.
This ongoing support has been provided on a volunteer basis, reflecting my commitment to community-led environmental action.
