Behind the Scenes of a Product Shoot: What Really Goes Into Stunning Product Photography

No Two Days Are Alike in Product Photography

One of the things I love most about product photography is how varied it is. One day I’m photographing beautiful reclaimed timber vanities on location, and the next I’m donning white gloves to handle bespoke floral resin keepsakes. Each shoot has its own creative direction, technical requirements, and storytelling goals.

From Clarity Call to Final Gallery

The process begins well before I pick up a camera. In our clarity call, we’ll chat about everything from your brand values to your ideal customer. Do you already have a vision? Are we creating cohesion with an existing visual library, or starting from scratch with a rebrand? Every detail helps shape our moodboard, which becomes the visual guide for your shoot.

Where We Shoot and Why It Matters

Some products - like large vanities - are best photographed onsite, while others can be mailed to my studio. The decision depends on the complexity and the creative brief, which we establish together. I always ensure the shoot location and lighting support your goals, whether we need clean e-commerce images or lifestyle visuals for social media.

Styling and Attention to Detail

Product photography is about more than just aesthetics - it’s about function, too. I provide a mix of functional, clean shots (especially for e-commerce), and creative, styled visuals that bring your product to life. When working with reflective surfaces or perishables, every lighting choice and styling element is carefully planned to reduce retouching time and maximise image quality.

What About Turnaround Time?

Most product shoots are turned around within two weeks from the time I receive your items. If you need them faster, we can discuss options (note that rush fees may apply). Importantly, I handle every aspect of post-production myself - nothing is outsourced, and quality is never compromised.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I drop off my products in stages?
Yes! This is something we’ll discuss during planning and can absolutely accommodate.

Will I receive RAW images?
No. I don’t release RAW images because they are unedited, flat, and not representative of the final polished product - or my brand.

Can I buy more images later?
Of course! Once your gallery is delivered, you can purchase additional images for a small cost.

Do you return the products?
That depends. Perishables typically aren’t returned due to spoilage. If you need items returned, just let me know during the planning stage - postage or collection can be arranged.

Tips for Preparing Your Products

  • If your packaging is important, include it! It helps us showcase the full customer experience.

  • Send multiple copies of each item in case one has imperfections or issues during the shoot.

  • Have specific props or items you want included? Include them with your product delivery!
