How to Plan a Personal Branding Photoshoot That Feels Like You
Planning a personal branding shoot can feel a bit overwhelming—what to wear, what to bring, how to pose, what images you actually need. But it doesn’t have to be stressful. In fact, with a little guidance (hi, that’s where I come in!), it can be a creative, empowering experience that leaves you with a gallery of images that feel just right.
As a working mum, creative, and former teacher, I know what it’s like to juggle a million tabs in your brain while trying to show up for your business. This post will walk you through how to prepare for a personal branding shoot that captures the real you - without the burnout.
What Is a Personal Branding Shoot?
It’s more than just headshots. A personal branding shoot is about telling the story of you - your values, your energy, your offerings. Whether you’re a coach, designer, maker, consultant, or entrepreneur, these photos help people connect with your brand before they’ve even read a word.
Start with the Why
Before we talk props or outfits, get clear on your purpose.
Where will you use the images? Website? Instagram? Media kits?
What message do you want them to communicate? (Trustworthy? Warm? Bold? Creative?)
What emotions do you want your audience to feel when they see you?
Once you know why you’re doing this shoot, we can build everything around that.
What Types of Images Should You Include?
Your shoot should capture a mix of imagery that reflects your brand’s personality and practical marketing needs. Here are some categories to think about:
Headshots – The modern kind: relaxed, natural, confident
Lifestyle portraits – You in action, doing what you love
Workspace details – The tools you use, your environment, the behind-the-scenes
Flat lays or product shots – If you offer physical products or branded tools
Casual moments – Smiling, sipping coffee, walking - real-life you
Creative Ideas to Make Your Shoot Unique
Bring a prop that speaks to your brand (laptop, coffee mug, product, journal, fabric swatches, etc.)
Think about textures or colors that align with your brand visuals
Include movement: walking, talking, writing, pouring a drink—this brings authenticity
Incorporate elements of your lifestyle: kids’ artwork, a pet, a creative hobby, or that vintage chair you thrifted
What to Wear for a Personal Branding Shoot
Think: comfortable, confident, and you. Avoid costumes or overly corporate looks - unless that’s your thing. Go for:
Clothes that reflect your brand colours or aesthetic
Pieces you feel amazing in (we’ll be able to tell!)
Layers and accessories to create variety
Options! Bring 2-3 outfit changes if possible
Bonus tip: try everything on beforehand, and do a quick phone selfie test to see how it photographs.
What to Bring
Outfit changes (plus lint roller, safety pins, and comfy shoes)
Your favourite mug, laptop, phone, notebook, or other props
Any brand elements (logo items, packaging, signage)
Water and a snack (especially if you’re not used to being in front of the camera for long)
Trust the Process
Feeling a little nervous is normal. My job is to help you feel at ease, offer gentle direction, and bring out your best. We’ll chat, laugh, move around, and before you know it - you’ll be nailing it.
You don’t need to know how to pose or have a perfect Pinterest board ready. What you do need is a willingness to show up. I’ll take care of the rest.
