From Classroom to Camera:

3 Teaching Lessons That Shape My Photography

Classrooms taught me how to see people.

Photography taught me how to show them.

For nearly 20 years, the education sector was my world. I’ve always been passionate about learning - not just my students’ learning, but my own. I loved exploring new curriculum areas, trying new approaches, and stretching myself across year levels and roles. From classroom teacher through to instructional leader, every stage of my career gave me opportunities to grow and refine skills that, at the time, I thought were just for teaching.

What I didn’t realise then was that those same skills would later become the foundation of my photography business. Today, whether I’m guiding a school through a shoot or helping a small business owner capture their brand story, I lean on the same teaching principles I lived by in the classroom: seeing people for who they are, working with integrity and care, and breaking down overwhelm with clarity and guidance. My classroom experience continues to inform my creative practice. The values that matter to students: being heard, feeling supported, and having a voice are just as essential in my work behind the camera.

Here are three lessons that shaped not only how I taught, but how I now photograph.

1. Creating Environments Where People Feel Seen … in Life and in Photos

As a teacher, I knew that students could only thrive when they felt safe, respected, and genuinely seen for who they were. Building that sense of belonging was the first step in helping them grow. Student Voice was not just central in the classroom but also in the approach I bring to client work and school photography. When students (and clients) feel heard and represented, engagement and trust improve, resulting in richer and more authentic outcomes.

I like to think that how, as a teacher I listened and adapted to my students and how I structure my sessions around the voices and perspectives of my clients isn’t any different! My mission is for clients to walk away from a shoot feeling confident, supported, and proud of how they’re showing up. Whether it’s a business owner finally seeing their true self reflected in brand images or a school capturing the spirit of its students, my role is to create an environment where people feel valued.

2. Leading with Integrity: Service with Soul

Teaching is a demanding profession, and impact teachers have is never just about the content taught. Students learned from how I showed up, with consistency, honesty, and heart. My years as an instructional leader taught me the importance of leading with integrity, listening deeply, and putting people at the centre of the process.

That same value system underpins my business. I describe it as service with soul: every shoot is personal, collaborative, and grounded in care. I’m not here to impose; I’m here to listen, guide, and create something meaningful together.

3. Clarity Builds Confidence … in the Classroom and on Camera

One of the joys of teaching was breaking down complex ideas into clear, achievable steps. I loved seeing the moment when overwhelm shifted into confidence when a student realised, “I can do this.” Technology was a great tool to help with this - creating videos students could access and look back over, students creating videos to share their understanding and knowledge. I have always technology as a ladder - not one that replaces the teacher (or creator), but one that gives us reach.

Photography is no different. Many clients arrive feeling unsure about what to wear, how to prepare, or how they’ll use their images. I bring the same teacher’s mindset: offering structure, checklists, planning sessions, and encouragement. My aim is to take away the guesswork so clients feel calm, prepared, and empowered to use their images strategically, not just aesthetically.

My career in education wasn’t just a chapter of my life, it’s the thread that continues to run through everything I do. Teaching taught me to see people, guide them with clarity, and serve with integrity. Now, as a photographer, those same principles shape the way I help businesses and schools tell their stories with confidence.

Whether I’m in a classroom or behind the camera, my purpose remains the same and drives my work; helping people see themselves and their stories with authenticity and heart.

If you’d like to experience a photoshoot that feels collaborative, calm, and confidence-building, let’s connect! I’d love to help you tell your story with purpose and soul.
